Blind Melon is an American rock band formed in 1990 in Los Angeles, California. It consists of guitarists Rogers Stevens and Christopher Thorn, drummer Glen Graham, vocalist Travis Warren and bassist Nathan Towne. The band is best known for its 1993 song "No Rain" and achieved commercial success in the early 1990s with a neo-psychedelic approach to alternative rock. It had sold over 3.2 million albums in the United States by 2008. Blind Melon released two albums on Capitol Records, "Blind Melon" (1992) and "Soup" (1995), before the death of original lead vocalist Shannon Hoon from a cocaine overdose on October 21, 1995, while on the band's tour bus in New Orleans. After several years of unsuccessfully searching for a replacement, Blind Melon dissolved in 1999. The remaining members reformed the band in 2006 with Travis Warren and released one album with him, "For My Friends" (2008). Warren left the group shortly after the album's release but returned in 2010, after which the band resumed occasional live performances. Blind Melon has received four Grammy Award nominations. Blind Melon formed in March 1990 after Rogers Stevens and Brad Smith met Shannon Hoon, who was originally from Lafayette, Indiana. Christopher Thorn joined soon after, and drummer Glen Graham later relocated to complete the lineup after the group was unable to find a permanent drummer in Los Angeles. The band's name was derived from a nickname used by Smith's father to describe hippies. It is also associated with the Cheech & Chong character Blind Melon Chitlin', a parody of blues musician Blind Lemon Jefferson. The band recorded a four-song demo titled "The Goodfoot Workshop" in 1991. Capitol Records signed the group and oversaw recording sessions with producer David Briggs for an unreleased EP titled "The Sippin' Time Sessions". These recordings were later abandoned due to dissatisfaction with production, which the band felt was overly polished. Hoon also gained attention through his friendship with Guns N' Roses vocalist Axl Rose, contributing backing vocals to several tracks on "Use Your Illusion I" and "Use Your Illusion II" (1991), including "Don't Cry". Blind Melon later toured with Soundgarden. At the suggestion of Glen Graham, the band relocated to Durham, North Carolina, while working on their debut album with producer Rick Parashar. Recording took place at London Bridge Studio in Seattle, Washington, and the album was largely recorded live with minimal overdubbing. "Blind Melon" was released in September 1992 and initially sold modestly, with "Tones of Home" and "No Rain" as its lead singles. The song "No Rain" became widely popular after its music video received heavy rotation on MTV, featuring Heather DeLoach as the "Bee Girl". The album later achieved multi-platinum status and entered the upper regions of the Billboard charts in 1993. The band toured extensively in support of their debut album, including international performances and support slots for artists such as Neil Young and Lenny Kravitz. They also performed at Woodstock '94 and supported The Rolling Stones on their Voodoo Lounge Tour. During this period, the band experienced increasing personal difficulties, including issues related to substance abuse, and Hoon underwent multiple stints in rehabilitation. In 1994, Blind Melon relocated to New Orleans to record their second album, "Soup", with producer Andy Wallace. The album, released in 1995, featured a more varied and experimental approach, incorporating elements such as jazz influences and unconventional instrumentation. Songs included references to topics such as suicide, serial killer Ed Gein, and Hoon's impending fatherhood. The single "Galaxie" reached number 25 on the Billboard chart, but the album did not meet commercial expectations. The band also contributed cover songs to tribute and compilation albums during this period, including "Out on the Tiles" for a Led Zeppelin tribute and "Three Is a Magic Number" for a Schoolhouse Rock! compilation. The band continued touring in support of "Soup". On October 21, 1995, Shannon Hoon was found dead on the band's tour bus in New Orleans. His death was attributed to a cocaine overdose. Following Hoon's death, the remaining members considered continuing with a new vocalist. In 1996, they released "Nico", an album consisting of outtakes, demos, and previously unreleased material from earlier recording sessions, named after Hoon's daughter. The album included cover versions and unfinished recordings, and proceeds were donated to addiction recovery programs. During this period, internal relationships within the band deteriorated as efforts to find a replacement singer continued. After failing to do so, Blind Melon officially disbanded in 1999. In 2002, Capitol Records released "Classic Masters", a compilation album. This was followed by additional retrospective releases and live recordings in the mid-2000s. In 2006, the band reunited with Travis Warren as vocalist and announced new material. The album "For My Friends" was released in 2008, alongside touring activity. Warren left later that year, and planned tour dates were partially cancelled. He briefly returned for a final scheduled performance in December 2008. Capitol Records released the EP "Deep Cuts" in 2009. The band members pursued various side projects during this period. In 2010, Blind Melon reformed again with Warren returning as vocalist, followed by sporadic live performances in the United States and internationally. The group continued to perform intermittently throughout the 2010s and 2020s, occasionally working on new material, though without a confirmed release date for a new studio album.
